Election Commission of Haryana is a body which manages elections for Panchayats as well as municipal authorities. Election Commission of Haryanawas established keeping in mind the various districts, villages and blocks in mind. These small towns, districts, Zila, Taluka and villages required a body to look after the election proceedings and to ensure that the elections are conducted with the right spirit. Thus, Election Commission of Haryana was established headed by Election Commissioner who is actually the chief electoral officer in the state. Presently, Haryana Election Commission is headed by Sumita Misra.
Since the inception of Haryana Election Commission in the year 1972, all the defects and shortcomings in conduct of Haryana have been resolved. The Haryana Election Commission has been able to bring in practice the mode of conducts laid out by the Chief Election Commissioner of India and has been able to keep a track over the various political parties contesting in the election and also over the winning party. Haryana Election Commission is responsible for both village Panchayat elections as well as Municipality elections.
Thus, the main attributes of Election Commission of Haryana include:
- According to the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments, the commission is responsible for conducting regular elections in the state. It has full authority over the election of local bodies and commands delegation of funds also.
- Electoral rolls are prepared, controlled and directed by the commission. Election Commission of Haryana voter list is also directly under the State Election Commissioner post 18th Nov 1993. This was when the State Election Commissioner position was raised and came into being.
- There are a total of one hundred and nineteen Panchayat Samitis, six thousand and eighty two Gram Panchayats, twenty one Zila Parishads, fourteen Municipal Councils, fifty two Municipal Committees and nine Municipal Corporations that are under Election Commission and thus Election Commissioner. Free and fair elections are held in the state with the aid of Election Commission. The first ever General Election was held in the state for Local Bodies in the year November and December 1994. Thereafter, there was no looking back for the commission.
Thus, the Election Commission is responsible for fair and free elections in the state at all level and to ensure democracy in the state, which the commission with the aid of all officials and the Election Commissioner of State is abiding with and fulfilling at each and every step.
