The Election Commission of Rajasthan came into being in July month of the year 1994. As per the constitution of India, Election Commission of Rajasthan was incepted under the article 243K. it is headed by the Election Commissioner which is separate for each state as per the rule. The secretary of Election Commission of Rajasthan is also known as the Chief Electoral Officer. According to the Constitution of India, the Rajasthan Election Commission has the responsibility to make electoral rolls and hold Municipal bodies and Panchayati Raj elections.
Election Commission of Rajasthan leaves no stone unturned in order to ensure fair elections. The local bodies of Rajasthan come under the Rajasthan Election Commission when it comes to supervision elections and conducting them.
Panchayati Raj Institution Elections
Rajasthan Election Commissionheads the Panchayati Raj Institutions elections which date back to 1960. It was Panchayat Department which held the first elections in the year 1960. Later, the second, third, fourth and fifth elections were conducted in the year 1965, 1978, 1981 and 1988 respectively. These were the responsibility of the Election Department only. Finaly, it was the sixth election that was the responsibility of Rajasthan Election Commission which was held in 1995 and later seventh election in the year 2000. The last general election held in Rajasthan was in the year 2005.
Municipal Bodies Elections
It was in the year 1960 that the first election was held by local self-department for Municipal bodies. In the year 1993, the first such election was held and Election Department had its responsibility. Later such elections were held in the year 1970, 72, 74, 76, 82 and 86. Election Commission of Rajasthan voter list had 137 Municipal bodies by 1995 which increased furthermore by the year 1999 and 2000. It was in the year 2004 that the last general election was conducted.
One can clearly see that Election Commission of Rajasthan voter list is made for this three-tier system of Panchayati Raj consisting of 32 District levels or Zila Parishads, 237 Block Level or Panchayat Samities and 9188villages or Panchayats. There are territorial constituencies in every Zila Parishad and the Zila Parishads which have population of four lakhs include 17 constituencies. Similarly, if the population is more than 4 lakhs, the constituencies automatically becomes 2.
Similarly, there are territorial constituencies in Panchayat Samities also. Every Panchayat has wards and there are 105257 wards in 9188 Panchayats in Rajasthan.
